Hacking Theatre: a warm-up Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 04:07 am

I am part-way through creating and arranging a collection of blog posts wherein I explore how theatre, both as an art form as well as a non-profit structure, can be hacked. By "hack" I mean in the same sense as a computer system. The goal will be to pinpoint backdoors, loopholes, gaps and other new and hidden ways of looking at theatre in a new light for contemporary society.

Browsing online today, I found an article where one aspect of how theatre is relating to contemporary audiences - the use of new(ish) technology - is investigated through several points of view.

Stephen Becker has compiled a collection of interviews over on the
KERA Art & Seek Blog that explore how online social media has affected arts organizations throughout the last decade. Read and listen here.

Goals for 2010 Jan. 4th, 2010 @ 04:57 am

I have thought about these for the last few days. There are, of course, other things I'd like to do this year (travel internationally, learn to tango, regularly handwrite correspondence, do some Fun Grip improv), but the things listed below constitute those goals I am determined to tackle and will consider the year, personally, very successful  if I accomplish.

1.       Get in shape

My very specific goals include getting my weight down 30 pounds, being able to run 2 miles in 17 minutes or under (this is roughly based on the standards of the U.S. Army Fitness Test) and being able to do 50 continuous push-ups.

2.       Play more indoor soccer

I have been playing on my sister's recreational co-ed indoor soccer team and it has proven to be really fun. I haven't, until last November, played a team sport since I was a little kid. I am rediscovering the joy and challenges of pure play in sports. I plan to continue to play indoor soccer and hopefully even get a little better at it in 2010.

3.       Stream-line the Dribble Funk website

It has been up for nearly five years and its time for an overhaul. The goal is to make it into a more dynamic tool for getting to know me and my specific artistic pursuits.

4.       Go digital

In the spring I will purchase an external hard drive and begin converting my CDs, photos and paperwork into digital files. I will go paperless with my monthly bills and throw out as much of my old paper files as possible (i.e. anything older than three months). The idea of a completely uncluttered desk is a romantic and potentially very realistic aim.

5.       Create an income stream

I’d like to be able to create a mostly- automated income stream and not have to really worry about my monthly income any more. I think this is entirely possible. I won’t go into detail here, but it will involve me creating an original online business using many of the strategies of Tim Ferriss’s book 4 HOUR WORK WEEK. The goal is not to get rich, but to not bust my ass and waste my time hobbling together my usual three-to-five part-time gigs. To work minimally, use the bulk of my time creating and traveling, but earn enough to live comfortably. I want to reach the end of the year and be able to say, “Money for basic monthly expenses. Check. One less thing to worry about.”

6.       Accumulate at least $800 in an emergency fund

I will keep adding to my savings until I have a "rainy day" fund put aside. This is up and beyond my retirement accounts and travel-specific savings accounts. I have already begun and, though, put away only $5 to $10 at a time, I will keep at it and concentrate of this very specific goal.

7.       See a Peter Brook production

Peter Brook, director of the C.I.R.T. in Paris is about to retire after 40 years at the Bouffes du Nord. This will be the last year there will be “Peter Brook productions.” Therefore, I will track down and travel to one of his last shows this season, even if I must traverse half the globe.

 8.       Finish a full-length play

I focused on solo work and getting produced in 2009. Now I will create my first (of several) full-length, multi-character play.

9.       Perform Dribble Funk ten (10) times

I have continued to think about and theorize my solo improv format Dribble Funk throughout the tail-end of 2009. But the best way to workshop it is to put it on its feet and in front of audiences. Improv is like a muscle, it does atrophy if not worked out. And improv, really good improv, is difficult. I will need to take the practice of it more seriously in order to have the serious fun that is there potentially. Dribble Funk, in particular, is still the only type of performance that consistently scares the crap out of me every time I do it and that alone is reason enough to perform it more often. Do what you fear, they say. At ten times, that’s just under once a month. I hope to surpass this, but 10 times is an attainable goal.

10.       Amaze myself

Accomplish something this year that really pushes my limits. Something that will actually amaze… well… myself. Something grand and crazy and bigger and more unexpected than my usual activities. I’m not completely sure what this will be, but it will probably worry my parents and cause my friends to roll their eyes.
